About the Project
Painted by The Guild, a paid apprenticeship that gives justice-impacted young people the opportunity to develop marketable job skills and reconnect with their community, Butterfly Lakes is a mural by artist Serena Saunders. Located at FDR Park’s Community Clubhouse, Saunders designed this beautiful tribute to FDR Park, honoring one of the park’s local names, “The Lakes,” by featuring native wildlife that flourishes in water. After meeting with local community members and Parks & Rec staff, Saunders created a mural that truly welcomes everyone to the community space. Inspired by the surrounding plants and animals, Serena envisioned this amazing mural to invite visitors to walk around and explore the local gem that is FDR Park.
The mural was dedicated on October 25, 2021, as part of a Guild cohort graduation ceremony.
