SUMMARY:MURO LX_21 URBAN ART FESTIVAL: LISBON\, PORTUGAL
DESCRIPTION:The MURO LX Festival in Lisbon spotlights new\, emerging artists as well as some of the most renowned modern street artists. It gives graffiti artists access to challenging new surfaces\, including the pillars of the Vasco da Gama bridge\, basketball courts\, pedestrian crossings\, train carriages\, and gables\, pushing the bounds of their creativity and encouraging them to interact with exciting new canvases and disused spaces. \nMURO LX_21 is the 4th festival of its kind and features new attractions\, including workshops\, concerts\, and walking tours around the finished murals. The previous three festivals\, in 2016\, 2017\, and 2019 allowed 157 artists to create 112 works of art\, which measured over 17\,000m2 in total. This year\, expect to see works by the likes of D*Face\, the RUA Collective\, and Bordallo II. \nThe theme for this year will be embodied by the motto ‘The wall that (re)unites us;’ a message that will be painted onto the Parque das Nacoes.

His own awareness of the importance street art was informed by his relationship with Keith Haring\, who sprayed up Goldman’s property on the Lower East Side of New York. When Goldman set his gaze upon Miami\, he saw great potential in the Wynwood warehouse district. \nEvery year\, just before Art Basel takes over Miami\, Goldman Properties brings in artists to paint new walls and do a refresh on old walls. So\, the mural work precedes Art Basel\, but Wynwood also hosts events with music\, food and new-age art installations during Art Basel.

DESCRIPTION:“Writing the Future” traces the progression from street art into fine art that began to occur in 1980s New York with the emergence of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The work of Basquiat and his contemporaries broke down the boundaries dictated by race\, background\, and high vs. low art to shape hip-hop culture across the US and globally. \nThe exhibition features multi-media works by Basquiat\, including drawings\, paintings\, films\, and music\, as well as his collaborative works\, which were produced alongside influential artists such as Keith Haring\, Lee Quiñones\, ERO\, and Lady Pink. These artists shaped the world of art and design that we know today\, subverting traditional artistic practices using methods such as wildstyle lettering and freestyle sampling. One of the most notable pieces on display is Hollywood Africans\, which depicts the artists Toxic and Rammellzee\, whom Basquiat collaborated with at the time. \nThis is the first exhibition to celebrate Basquiat’s important connection to hip-hop culture.

SUMMARY:STREET ART FEST: GRENOBLE\, FRANCE
DESCRIPTION:The Grenoble Alps street art fest began in 2015 with 30 artists and they now have over 180 works up. The most recent festival featured 38 artists painting 10 huge walls and over 70 other surfaces. They are now curating artists from outside of France for this years festival. \nThe month-long festival has expanded both their physical space and their media. Grenoble now includes digital street art\, exhibitions and a movie festival. The festival is also busting out of central Grenoble to include the nearby towns of Fontaine\, Saint-Martin-d’Hères Le-Pont-de-Claix and Echirolles. \nDue to the Corona pandemic the programme has evolved\, national artists will get to work during the first fortnight of June. Depending on the opening of borders\, the organisers hope to invite international artists between June 20th and July 15th. A final period of wall mural painting is planned for September and October.

Impressive mural reproductions are also exhibited like the well-known No Balls Game Banksy painted in London in 2009 and Waiting in Vain painted in New York in 2013. A reproduction of Banksy’s work made on the Bataclan doors following the tragic terror attacks in 2015 is also on display. \nIn order to welcome visitors in the best possible conditions\, “The World of Banksy” has 3 extra late openings on Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays until 10 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Montreal’s festival was inspired in part by the celebration of urban art happening on the Wynwood Walls. Montreal started its own festival in 2013. There was already a lively street art and graffiti scene in Montreal\, but the festival has catapulted it to another realm. \nFor the large murals\, they have a 50/50 mix of Canadian to international artists. They focus primarily on Canadian artists for the smaller venues\, pop-ups and temporary art installations. \nThe festival secured the support of the business improvement district for the St. Lawrence Boulevard. This has ensured that they can close the street for the full 11-day festival. The business support and street closure have made it possible for them to program additional events\, such as music and art installations\, attracting over 415\,000 visits to the festival.

DESCRIPTION:As we know\, New York is covered in street art\, but you’ll find the majority of it in Brooklyn. They celebrate it with Bushwick’s annual block party– a massive one day party full of street art\, music and food. Joe Ficalora founded the Bushwick Collective. He was motivated to transform what had been desolate and crime-ridden blocks into a neighbourhood that Brooklyn could be proud of\, showcasing the creative talent that resides there. \nThe Block Party will have as many as 40 artists working on murals and graffiti. Local artists paint most of the works\, although you’ll also see some imports on the walls. The block party itself inaugurates the murals and then the party gets going with music and food throughout the weekend.
