Manager of Art & Programs 

The Mural Arts Restorative Justice department seeks a passionate and creative Manager of Art & Programs who is committed to working in partnership with justice-impacted individuals (especially those incarcerated at SCI Phoenix) to engage community driven public art processes that advance specific restorative justice goals and strengthen long-term advocacy work.

Restorative Justice is an alternative to traditional means of rehabilitation and punishment which brings together returning citizens and community members, focusing on conversation and understanding as the first steps on the path to individual and community healing.

 

Our Public Art Projects and SCI Phoenix work aim to:

  • Develop and implement Artist Mentor led programming co-created in partnership with justice-impacted participants at SCI Phoenix.
  • Publicly showcase art and community based art making projects and exhibits.
  •  Prepare Artist Mentors to engage carceral systems with a restorative approach.
  • Support justice-impacted participants through learning debriefs, community conversations, and practice.
  • Ensure resources and opportunities are shared equitably w/ Artist Mentors and partners.
  • Support informal opportunities for mentorship, information exchanges, connection, and convenings to share artistic practices.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with Artist Mentors and justice-impacted participants at SCI Phoenix, develops art education frameworks that enhance outcomes of mural projects, empowers participants towards their individualized goals and forges strong, positive bonds between returning citizens and justice-impacted communities.
  • Cultivates strategic partnerships and integrates local vendors, community members and stakeholders into opportunities for collaboration.
  • Leads special projects that include public mural making, artist collaborations and exhibitions.
  • Understands the development of audience specific engagement recognizing that adult learners benefit from tailored learning experiences.
  • Partners with artists incarcerated who contribute to public and participatory work both on the inside and outside of SCI Phoenix.
  • Develops a project-based curriculum to support the Art Room at the SCI Phoenix with the potential for expansion in 2026.
  • Work with justice impacted artists at SCI Phoenix on employable and life skills that improve their access to opportunities.
  • Engage artists, guest speakers, and talent to forge the growth of the justice impacted artists.
  • Able to work closely and collaboratively with the MAP Restorative Justice department team to develop a project-based curriculum, integrate community feedback and a steadfastness to support justice impacted communities.
  • Motivated to inspire and guide artists in creating individual works of art, designing and producing murals, experimenting with media, and assisting professional artists on large scale public art projects.
  • Travel to SCI Phoenix and other facilities on a weekly or biweekly basis, including managing this schedule and coordinating artist supply needs. Mural-making experience is preferred but not required.

 

Professional Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in project management, program development, event planning, teaching and/or curriculum development.
  • Ability to work  in partnership with a variety of communities, collaborating with artists and partners to complete projects from the initial design phase through installation while also managing promotional outreach efforts.
  • Experience working in prison or justice impacted environments.
  • Knowledge of community driven public art practices.
  • Experience developing and implementing learning opportunities.
  • Knowledge of public art at the intersection of criminal justice and art and art-making techniques.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings with  6-10 artists in person and virtually.
  • Experience working with adult learners in choosing pathways that best fit their preferred learning journeys and goals.
  • Experience working with incarcerated/justice-impacted artists is strongly encouraged, but not necessary.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, create reports, manage spending and budgets, provide supervision, schedule meetings, organize projects, coordinate supplies and steward valuable artwork using proper art handling techniques.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues, site partners and community members in flexible, thoughtful and responsive ways.
  • Work with artists to manage timelines, anticipate challenges, and  execute mural making processes and manage events and art exhibitions including the annual Barnes Summer exhibition and Defender Association Art Sale.
  • Mentor, support and provide feedback to the team assigned to the prison work.
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills, someone who is also proficient at problem solving, teambuilding, compassion, and collaboration.
  • Strong commitment to supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility at the workplace.
  • Strong communication skills in both written and verbal contexts whether through public storytelling using social media or presentations, slide decks, or event promotion.
  • Highly organized self-starter who is able to work independently and achieve success in a fast paced environment

  • Biweekly travel is required for the purposes of delivering services, cultivating relationships and maintaining a consistent presence with a team of Artist Mentors, Administrators and Participants.

Guild & Rec Crew Program Manager  

The Mural Arts Restorative Justice department seeks a passionate and highly organized Guild & Rec Crew Program Manager who is committed to working in partnership with justice-impacted individuals (especially those 18-24 years old) to engage community driven public art processes that advance specific restorative justice goals and strengthen long-term advocacy work.

Your Day to Day Work with Guild participants and Rec Crew members aims to:

  • Provide structure, consistency, guidance and regular supervision to staff and participants with support from the Director.
  • Develop and implement programming co-created in partnership with justice-impacted participants, artists and staff.
  • Support justice-impacted participants through learning debriefs, community conversations, and artistic practices.
  • In a collaborative and professional manner, provide support to a robust village of internal and external partners assembled in service of the program participant’s personal and career development goals.
  • Connect, support and ultimately place participants in job and or training opportunities that support a cleaner, greener, safer Philadelphia.
  • Develop frameworks that enhance outcomes of mural projects, empower participants towards their individualized goals and forge strong, positive bonds between justice impacted participants and communities.

 

Leadership Duties:

 

  • Model safety and care through holistic programs, empowerment through participatory art, and a focus on providing education and awareness around eliminating violence through mediation.
  • Create an environment that prioritizes safety, welcomes and respects adult participants from all backgrounds, and is in alignment with organization and departmental goals and values, rooted in restorative practices.
  • Ensure rules and guidelines are clearly laid out, implemented and followed making sure staff communicate about any incidents that take place during work hours.
  • Model, mentor and promote high accountability and high support code of conduct specified in the handbook (including working with the Director of the Department to update the handbook).

 

Management Duties:

 

  • Deliver or organize staff and participant trainings that respond to areas of learning and growth within the Restorative Justice Department.
  • Manage Guild cohort scheduling for 25 justice and/or system impacted participants primarily between ages of 18 and 24.
  • Manage approved budget for the Guild and the Rec Crew Programs and Rec Crew projects ensuring expenses are in alignment and all demonstrative protocols governing the budget are followed.

 

Programmatic Duties:

 

  • Develop programming and curriculum to include skill development, career exploration, conflict resolution, creative and art making programs that bridge members into long term living wage career options.
  • Ensure all required data is collected and maintained to ensure compliance with funder requirements and regular grant reporting deadlines.
  • Document attendance in alignment to participant expectations and identify areas of concern and action steps when viewing attendance, lateness, and behavioral challenges.
  • Partner with the Department Director and identified consultants to develop curriculum planning for both the Guild and its companion program the Rec Crew.
  • Work with the Rec Crew Coordinator and Project Manager to oversee mural projects including site visits, working with artists, production, installation and dedication events.
  • Participate in organization wide trainings, events, meetings as required

 

Partnership Duties:

 

  • Serve as an integral ambassador of the Restorative Justice (RJ) Department team to advance the mission of Mural Arts Philadelphia and the goals of the RJ Department.
  • Establish community partnerships that increase the reach of the department and opportunities for the participants.
  • Lead with a solution oriented approach to challenges while maintaining a focus on the goals of the program.
  • Serve as connector, resource and first point of contact for program instructors and serve as a support in the class during demonstrations and presentations.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with individuals and institutions to support programs and participants.

 

Ideal candidate will demonstrate:

 

  • Advanced interpersonal/communication skills, with excellent team building skills.
  •  Excellent digital literacy skills.
  •  Strong supervisory and public presentation skills.
  •  Experience developing and implementing learning opportunities for adults.
  •  Familiarity with Trauma Informed Care, Restorative Practice and/or Youth Mental Health preferred.
  •  Awareness of the principles and practices of Restorative Justice preferred.
  •  Experience with program development, facilitation and implementation.
  •  Knowledge of community driven public art practices and belief in the power of participatory public art to beautify, inspire and empower.
  • Ability to develop/maintain relationships and partnerships in multiple communities and contexts across race, class, nationality, gender, ability, and language.
  • Understanding of Systemic and Institutional Racism with Pro-Justice focus.
  •  Alignment with core organizational values (curiosity, collaboration, innovation, diversity, equity, accountability and forgiveness).
  • Ability also to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain focus in a fast-paced work environment.
  •  Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including colleagues, partners and community members in flexible, thoughtful and responsive ways
  •  Ability to meet deadlines, create reports, manage spending and budgets, organize projects and delegate responsibilities.
  •  Ability to lead regular check-ins that incorporate information about upcoming projects &/or events, discussion about any incidents, any other concerns.
  •  Keep appropriate accounts of receipts and follow organization protocol to submit credit card allocations.
  •  Work with the Director to ensure tracking of program budgets.

 

Professional Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum of five years experience working with Justice impacted communities or communities impacted by substance misuse or mental health challenges.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related fields or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years supervisor experience.
  • Strong ability to facilitate groups in ways that engage and build investment.
  •  Curriculum implementation and/or program development experience.
  •  Commitment to collaboration with internal and external partners.
  •  Aptitude to perform in confidential situations.
  •  Ability to facilitate meetings of 6-10 people in person and on zoom
  •  Contribute to evaluation of and reporting to funders on project outcomes.
  •  Update-to-date Child Abuse, FBI and Criminal background clearances.
  •  Driver’s license (necessary)
  •  Other related duties may be required by the supervisor.

 

Minimum Salary/Hourly Rate: $60,000 – $62,000

IT Operations Manager 

The IT Operations Manager works closely with Mural Arts’ 3rd party IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) and Mural Arts staff. The IT Operations Manager provides oversight and hands-on management for MSP support and as a project manager for IT projects and initiatives.

This position reports to both the Senior Director of Finance and the Senior Director of Communications and Brand Management. This position is a part-time, temporary position for one (1) year.

A signature project in the first year of this position will be the launch of Mural Arts’ flagship website: muralarts.org. This work will involve liaising between the web development team, staff, and stakeholders. It will collect and deliver content and manage vendors, budgets, and subscriptions related to this project. Additional projects will be added as capacity allows and familiarity with Mural Arts IT infrastructure matures.

The position requires no specialized IT training but seeks candidates with a strong generalist skill set and fluency in enterprise-level IT management. Candidates with proven information technology and project management skills are ideal for this role. Duties will include:

  • Act as both virtual and physical liaison between IT support and Mural Arts staff
  • Assist the archival team in the migration and management of legacy system data
  • Co-administrative support of Google Workspace account and services
  • Co-administrative support for Mural Arts software from Adobe Creative Cloud to Zoom
  • Coordination of or direct support for office A/V equipment, Printer maintenance requests, phone system mapping
  • Forecast IT needs and work with the Senior Director of Finance to ensure staff have the necessary equipment to accomplish their jobs.
  • Work with the Director of Finance and MSP to create and accomplish monthly, quarterly, annual, and long-term IT goals.
  • Staff technology onboarding and offboarding
  • Management of hosting plans, domain registration and renewals, developer access/permissions for Mural Arts-owned websites
  • Point of contact for website support and administration
  • Serve as a backup system administrator for our Salesforce environment in collaboration with the Manager of Development Operations
  • Act as co-system administrator for our various software, including but not limited to BoardEffect, WealthEngine, Apricot, Campaign Monitor, Sage Intacct, GiveSmart, Smartsheets, Airtable
    Software license management

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with a variety of mobile and desktop operating systems, including Windows, Windows Server, MAC OS, Android, and IOS
  • Project Management experience
  • Demonstrated experience in creative problem-solving and advanced technical troubleshooting
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate technical information to a range of audiences at all levels of technical expertise
  • Ability to maintain and strengthen relationships with vendors and external stakeholders
  • Ability to successfully manage a variety of competing priorities
  • Experience with scripting languages a plus
  • Experience in the nonprofit and/or Arts & Culture a plus

Other Position Details

This is a temporary part-time position, 20 hours per week, at an hourly rate of $40. This role is hybrid, with an expectation to be physically present in Mural Arts Philadelphia’s offices, studio, and hub spaces as needed to perform hands-on tasks.
